Bisphenol A (BPA) Plastics warning

iStock_000008496023XSmall.jpgA recent ban on bottled water from the retail shelves in Bunadoon NSW has gained worldwide media attention and concern'

The Endocrine Society released it's first ever scientific statement that stated that they had found evidence for adverse reproductive outcomes (infertility , cancers , malformations) from exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals.

There is mounting evidence for effects on other endocrine systems including thyroid,neuroendocrine , obesity and metabolism , and insulin and glucose homeostasis.

The US National Toxicology Program and friends of the earth Australia & Europe provided the following practical tips

 

  • Don't heat , especially with a microwave , plastic food, beverage containers. Wait until heated food is cool before transferring it to a plastic container.
  • Avoid plastics with a 7,3 or 6 stamped on it's recycling symbol; this may include foods wrapped in PVC.
  • Eat seasonal produce to avoid that grown in plastic greenhouses.
  • Don't wash polycarbonate plastic containers in the dishwasher with harsh detergents
  • Reduce the use of canned foods. Eat fresh or Frozen foods
  • Choose glass , porcelain or stainless steel containers particularly for hot food or liquids.
  • Use infant formula Bottles  and toys that are BPA Free.
