The liver is the second largest organ (after the skin) and the largest gland in the body. It plays many important roles, the most well-known one being its role in detoxification. In addition to detoxification it performs over five hundred separate jobs, including the following vital functions: produces glucose (blood sugar) and coverts it to glycogen, the form of sugar that can be stored in your cells for later use; keeps the body’s supply of protein at the right levels; produces many important blood proteins, including immune factors and proteins involved in blood clotting; breaks down fats; stores fat soluble vitamins and some minerals; removes poisonous chemicals from the blood and breaks them down.

This combination contains herbs that support the liver in its important functions.

• St Mary’s Thistle is one of the best known herbs to support the liver. It has traditionally been used for conditions that affect the liver and gall bladder.
• Barberry displays a number of different properties, including cholagogue (assist the release of bile that has already been formed in the biliary system), choloretic (assists the production of bile) and bitter. Historically it was considered a tonic, as well as being used to support the liver and gall bladder.
• Fringe Tree is a cholagogue and laxative that helps to support the liver. It is also thought to have slightly diuretic properties.
